You will have noticed that throughout this website we have as much as possible avoided the words; God; Christ; Lord; Holy; etc. This is due to the suspect origin of many words in current use in the English language. On this page we are not attempting to look at any other language except English, as we are native born English speakers.
From Zephaniah 3:9 we can see that Yahweh himself sees a need for a pure language, why? So we can call on His name with one consent.
Exodus 23:13 “And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the names of other gods, neither let it be heard out of your mouths.”
When studied closely it is both surprising and alarming just how many words in common English usage have their origin in the deities of the pagan world. In particular the deities of ancient Greece; Rome and Egypt.
We propose on this page to look at some words found in most English Bibles (including the word bible itself), then at a few words used in everyday speech. The thought to create these pages came from a comment we read where someone claimed YHWH had ‘risen up English’ as the pure language of Zephaniah 3:9; we believe this is highly unlikely!
AMEN. This word cited at the finish of almost every Christian prayer has to be one of Ha Satan’s greatest deceptions. So very close to the original word, but far enough away, to have had all of us at sometime calling on the name of a pagan god at the end of each prayer. Amen-Ra was the name of an Egyptian god. The Hebrew word translated and spoken as “amen” is more correctly Amein ( said as Aw-Mane) while this may seem to be a subtle difference, when spoken out into the spirit realm the difference is significant. Yahushua called Himself the “Amein” in Rev3:14. Let us not confuse Amein with Amen. For those who would like to check further on the Egyptian god Amen, we provide the following links: www.touregypt.net/amenra.htm http://www.virtualegypt.com/newhtml/data/amen.htm BIBLE. We prefer to use the terms, Scriptures or Writings for the complete set of books of both the Old and Renewed Covenant Scriptures.
The word Bible comes from ‘Byblos’ the name the Greeks called the papyrus (paper) that documents were written on. This papyrus was imported from a Phoenician seaport called Gebal (Jbail in Lebanon). In modern Lebanon this Coastal city of Byblos is about 37 kms north of Bierut. It was in this city of Gebal (Byblos) that the Balaat-Gebal or “Lady of Byblos” temple was built. The Phoenician Goddess Byblia that had been worshipped there, was also known to the pagan world as Astarte, her sphere of influence was said to include, war; protection; love and fertility. The city of Byblos was also the centre of Adonis worship, Adonis being the sun god that supposedly died in winter, to be reborn in spring. Byblia was also the counterpart of Het-Hert (Hathor) who was said to be “an eye of Ra” protecting the King’s chariot. Amen-ra being the head of Baal worship.
You will not find the word bible in the Books of your Old or Renewed Covenant Scriptures. The only place you will find this word is on the cover and the title page. Maybe it would be best if we all recovered and retitled our copies of YHWH’s Word.
CHRIST. While the Greeks did use the word Messias for the Hebrew Mashiach (anointed) they more often used the word Christos. This was because Christos was more acceptable to the pagans, who were worshipping Chreston and Chrestos.
Christos being easily confused with Chrestos. When believers were first called ‘christians’ it was meant in a derogatory manner, it was an insult.
Osiris, the Sun-deity of Egypt was reverenced as Chrestos. The inscription ‘Chrestos’ can be seen on a Mithras relief in the Vatican. For this reason we no longer use the term “Christ”, instead we say “Messiah” or “Mashiach.”
CHURCH. The word that is translated church, in the Renewed Covenant Scriptures is No:1577 in Strong’s; ekklesia; means ‘a calling out’; ‘meeting’ or ‘congregation’. So where most translations read ‘Church of God’ this would be better rendered “Called out ones of YHWH” ,“Congregation of YHWH” or “Assembly of YHWH.” The English word ‘Church’ is in Scotland ‘Kirk’ and Germans say, ‘Kirche’ Most dictionaries give the origin of the word Church as having come from the Anglo Saxon word circe. Circe was a pagan goddess who supposedly trained animals to go round in circles. (The words circle and circus also have the same origin)
Some folk believe the origin of “Church” was the Greek word Kuriakon which means “House of the Lord” and so they figure that its OK to use the word Church. However considering Greece was full of Pagan deities, we could ask to which ‘Lord” were they referring? Furthermore the goddess Circe was supposedly the daughter of Helios, the Sun deity of ancient Greece.
The better rendition of the word Ekklesia is , ‘Called out Ones’ “Congregation” or “Assembly”. Why risk offending the Creator of All by using any words suspected of being connected to other gods.
CROSS. The cross was a pagan symbol from way before the time that Yah’shua was on the earth. The two beamed cross was the symbol of the Chaldean god Tammuz. The Encyclopaedia Britannica makes reference to the Egyptians using the cross as a pagan symbol of life, this symbol was then borrowed by the Christians.
This cross was most likely accepted into the worship after Constantines vision of the cross superimposed on the sun. Constantines coins showed an even cross as a symbol of the sun god, this continued even after his so called conversion. Constantine was one of those who brought paganism into Messianic Teachings and Worship.
The Greek word mistranslated as Cross was “stauros” it means ‘stake’ or ‘upright pole’. Our Saviour was not crucified on a cross, He was torturously executed on a stake; this was the method of execution used by the Romans at that time in Judea. The whole symbolism of the cross is pagan to the core and an historically inaccurate portrayal of the death of Messiah.
GLORY. Glory is yet another word that has its origins in sun worship. From the Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary we read “in religious symbolism, a combination of the nimbus and the aureola” “a burst of sunlight” “a ring or glow of light around the moon” “boastful or self-gratulatory spirit” gloriole, “a halo or glory”
Neither the Greek nor the Hebrew words in scripture that have been rendered glory, has any such meaning. The Greek word ‘doxa’ (1391 in Strong’s) and the Hebrew word ‘kabod’ 93519 in Strong’s) would both be better translated as “honour” “esteem” or “high esteem”
We have found the word glory (glorious, glorified, glorify) quite a challenge to replace in some songs, any suggestions for suitable replacement words ,would be received with appreciation.
GOD. God is a generic term used in English the world over for the Mighty One of all religions. For this reason, many think it is just as suitable a word to use as the Hebrew El; Elohiym and Eloah; as El is a generic term also. If it were indeed that simple this would be true.
This argument however looses it’s validity when one considers the origin of the word God. God it seems originated with the personal name of a Syrian or Canaanite deity called ‘Gad’; the deity of fortune and good luck. With this in mind ‘God’ is not an appropriate term by which to refer to Our Creator.

HOLY. The Hebrew word Qodesh (Kodesh) and the Greek word Hagios have been translated as Holy (hallowed ,sanctified or sacred). The Hebrew word Qodesh means “Set Apart” or “separation”
The word holy on the other hand is derived from the worship of the sun. Almost every pagan worship has a connection to this word, the Greek god Helios; the Hindu festival for Krishna the sun god is called “ Holi.”
‘Holy’ is related to the glow of the sun ,and connects with “Halo” the glowing nimbus seen in representations of deity. The German word is ‘heilig’ and comes from the name of the saxon god Heil.
There is nothing remotely scriptural about the word ‘holy’ it comes directly from Baal worship. Best to stick with the Hebrew “Qodesh” or “Set Apart”.
JESUS. (see also;By No Other Name.) The name of our Saviour the Messiah, was not Jesus or Iesous. The Messiah was a Hebrew born of Hebrews and was given a Hebrew Name. Messiah came in the Name of His Father Yahweh, His Name is Yah’shua (Yah is Salvation).
“Jesus” on the other hand is a name that has no apparent meaning, and has no connection to the Name of Yahweh.
“Jesus” is thought to be derived from the names of Greek gods; there are a number of schools of thought on this , one being that “Ie” was for ‘hail’ and the “sous” referenced ‘zeus’ so that “Jesus” was “hail Zeus.” Another is that ‘Ies’ was a Greek goddess and that name was combined with “Zeus.” Which ever school of thought you wish to go with, you can be sure that Zeus will be in there somewhere. Let us reverence The Father in Heaven and the Messiah, by addressing Mashiach with His true name Yahushua.
LORD. While the Hebrew word ‘ Adonai’ is merely a generic term meaning ‘Master’ it has been translated to the English word ‘Lord’. The word Lord is not so much a generic term as derivative of the name of an Etruscan Deity Larth. For more on why ‘Lord’ and “Adonai are not suitable replacements for YHWH, see “The 3rd Commandment” In instances where the word Adonai was genuinely used in its own right and not as a replacement for YHWH, we could use the English word ‘Master’. Master being the meaning of both the Hebrew ‘Adonai’ and the Greek ‘Kurios.’
While there are many other words that would be better translated differently, on this page we are primarily concerned with words that violate the Ex.23:13 instruction to make no mention of other gods. To give some examples of more words in common English usage that have been derived from pagan deities we have compiled the following list. This list is by no means comprehensive it just serves to show just how polluted the English language really is.
Cereal: From Ceres goddess of agriculture East: From Eos Greek goddess of dawn Echo: Echo was the name of a nymph in Greek Mythology Fate: From The Fates, 3 goddess’s ( Lachesis; Atropos,Clotho) of Greek and Roman mythology said to control human destiny. Fortune: From Fortuna a Roman goddess Genius: From Roman mythology a genii (as in genie) a tutelary deity or gaurdian spirit of a person Helium: From Helios Greek god of the sun Hymn: From the Greek hymnos, derived from one of the muses, “Polyhymnia” the Muse of mime. Hypnosis: From Hypnos Greek god of sleep. Mnemonic: From Mnemosyne Greek goddess of memory, mother of the 9 Muses Morphine: From Morpheus Greek god of dreams Museum + Music: Come from the Muses Ocean: From Okeanos a Titan from Greek mythology Psyche: From Psyche a princess loved by Cupid Siren: From a mythical sea nymph named Siren Venerate: From Venus the Roman goddess of love and beauty, Volcanic: From Vulcan the Roman god of fire. Zeal: From Zelos the Greek god of emulation (or zeal) brother of Nike
What can we do at this time about the pollution of the English language? Well the answer is, ‘not a lot’ except to be more careful about the way in which we address our Father in Heaven and Messiah Yah’shua. We can only try to avoid using words we know are derived from pagan deities as much as possible, and wait for YHWH to give us that pure language promised in Zephaniah 3:9.
