“The Appointed Times”
Exactly what do these words mean to you? Have you really given it any thought? Again, does it matter what words we as human beings use in our worship of the Most High?
We don’t want you to believe us for what we say, we rather want you to believe something that you have proven to yourself to be truthful! It takes a lot of personal study, prayer time, and meditating on your studies!
The arch-enemy of good, the one who perverts anything that is good, the one who makes himself look good, will even pervert these Appointed Times! And he has!
In this study paper, we’ll investigate these Appointed Times (‘Holy’ Days), both in the Old Covenant and the New! Let’s begin!
Lev 23:2 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of Yahweh (the LORD), which you shall proclaim to be set-apart (‘holy’) convocations, even these are my feasts. (KJV) (italicized words added)
4150 (feasts) mowed` or moed` or (feminine) mow` adah (2 Chr. 8:13)- (Brown-Driver-Briggs) an appointed place, an appointed time, a meeting
a) an appointed time 1) an appointed time (in general) 2) a set-apart (sacred) season, a set feast, an appointed season
b) an appointed meeting
c) an appointed place
d) an appointed sign or signal
e) the Tent of Meeting
We can see that these feasts days are referred to as Appointed Times, as an Appointed Season in the above definition! What about the use of the word ‘holy’, as in ‘holy days’ or ‘holy convocation?’ Is this a proper word that should be used?
Lew White writes this about the word ‘holy’ in Fossilized Customs, pages 102-103;
(quote) “This word became used instead of the Hebrew term qodesh, which means ‘set-apart’. To a Pagan, ‘holy’ related to the sun’s glow, and relates to the word ‘halo’, a glowing nimbus seen on statues and pictures.
The Pagans called shrines ‘hallowed’. The holy ‘halo’ was to associate the statue of the glowing deity with the yellow sun. (unquote)
C. J. Koster states this in Come Out Of Her My People, pages 38, 39;
(quote) “In Strong’s Condorance, in the Greek Lexicon No. 1506, we found the following: “heile (the sun’s ray) – this is pronounced: heilei.
This form is almost identical to the German and Dutch equivalent of the English ‘holy.’ The meaning of ‘halo’, the ring on the top of a saint’s head, now became clear to us.
And this was confirmed in J. C. Cooper, An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Traditional Symbols, page 112, “NIMBUS, HALO, or AUREOLE: Originally indicative of solar power and the sun’s disk, hence an attribute of sun gods.”
The German and Dutch equivalent of ‘holy’ is heilig, which is derived from Heil. Who was this Heil? We read in Bell’s New Pantheon the shocking fact that Heil was a Saxon (old Prussian or North Germanic) idol!
If it has been revealed to us, having been led by the Spirit of Truth, that the word ‘holy’ has been derived from the divinely honoured sun, can we ignore it? In direct contrast to this ‘sun-origin’ of the word ‘holy,’ the Hebrew qodesh and the Greek hagios have nothing to do with the sun or sun-rays at all. (unquote)
In our Fellowship, we now use set-apart instead of ‘holy’ because of what we have uncovered in our studies…each of you reading this will have to make up your own mind. You will have to ask yourself…Does it really matter? To us it does matter!
Set-apart Days and Appointed Times are what we use now, NOT HOLY DAYS !!!
Let’s now go over these Feasts of Yahweh, one by one, both in the Old and the New Covenants! It should be both interesting and edifying!
The Sabbath
Leviticus 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a set-apart (holy) convocation; you shall do no manner of work: it is a Sabbath unto Yahweh (Jehovah) in all your dwellings. (ASV)
Gen 2:2-3 2 And on the seventh day Elohim (God) ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. (NKJ) 3 And Elohim (God) blessed the seventh day and made it set-apart (holy), because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done. (NIV)
We see that the Creator (John 1:1-3, Col. 1;14-16) ‘rested’ after completing the re-creation of the earth and the creation of man (Gen 1:2-31). Did He have to rest, did He get weary from all of His labors? I would have to say, ‘Absolutely not’, an example was given to mankind to follow!
Why is the seventh day so important for us today? The One who says ‘I change not’ gave it to us for a reason…let’s investigate this reason!
Exod 31:13 Speak you also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my Sabbaths you shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that you may know that I am Yahweh (the LORD) that does set (sanctify) you apart. (KJV)
Exactly what is a sign? When we travel by vehicle, we need a roadmap to help us get to our destination… the roadmap gives us the big picture!
We also need road signs along the way to help us on our path! Signs will alert us of any dangers, obstacles, repairs, and course corrections needed etc., they get our attention… (hopefully anyway!).
The Scriptures are our ROADMAP to our spiritual destination, and it does have many signs for us to heed! The Sabbaths of Yahweh are a very important SIGN!
226 'owth- (Brown-Driver-Briggs) 1) a sign, a signal a) a distinguishing mark b) a banner c) remembrance d) a miraculous sign e) an omen f) a warning
2) a token, an ensign, a standard, a miracle, a proof.
Is this sign, the seventh day Sabbath, in the New Covenant as well? Should this sign be a part of our spiritual journey today?
Luke 4:16 (MKJV) And He (Messiah) came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And, as His custom was, He went in to the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.
Acts 17:1-2 1 Now when they had gone through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica. Here there was a Jewish synagogue, 2 and Paul (Shaul), according to his usual custom, went in to them and, for three Sabbath Days, he reasoned with them out of the Scriptures, (MNT)
1 Peter 2:21 For to this you were called, because Messiah (Christ) also suffered for us, leaving us an example (a sign!), that you should follow His steps: (NKJV)
Passover and Unleavened Bread
Leviticus 23:5 On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is Yahweh’s (the LORD'S) Passover. (NKJV)
Exodus 12:6-8,12 6 And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs in the evening. (RSV) 7 They shall take some of the blood, and put it on the two door posts and on the lintel, on the houses in which they shall eat it. (WEB) 8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. (KJV)
12 For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am Yahweh (Jehovah). (ASV)
John 1:29 The next day John saw Yahshua (Jesus) coming towards him, and exclaimed: ‘Here is the Lamb of Elohim (God), who is to take away the sin of the world!’ (TCNT)
Revelation 5:9,12 9 They sang a new song, saying, ‘You (the Lamb) are worthy to take the book, and to open its seals: for you were killed, and bought us for Elohim (God) with your blood, out of every tribe, language, people, and nation’… (WEB)
12 and in loud voices they were singing, ‘It is fitting that the Lamb which has been offered in sacrifice should receive all power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and esteem (glory) and blessing.’ (WNT)
We see that both in the Old and the New Covenants, a lamb, blood, and unleavened bread are all important!
Certain things were changed in the New Covenant Passover…certain things were added…let’s research!
1 Corinthians 5:8 Let us, therefore, celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. (RSV)
Matthew 26:26-28 26 And when they were taking food, Yahshua (Jesus) took bread and, after blessing it, He gave the broken bread to the disciples and said, ‘Take it; this is my body’. (BBE) 27 And having taken the cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink you all of it. (DBY) 28 For this is My blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.’ (MKJV)
John 13:4-5,12-14 4 He r0se from supper, and laid aside His garments; and took a towel, and girded Himself. (KJV) 5 Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded. (ASV)
12 Then, after washing their feet and putting on His robe again, He took His seat and said to them, Do you see what I have done to you? (BBE) 13 You call me the Teacher and the Master (Lord), and you say well, for I am so. (DBY) 14 If then I, the Master (Lord) and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. (MKJV)
In the New Covenant Passover, Yahshua ha Mashiach is our sacrificial Lamb, He is our Bread of Life, and His blood saves us from the penalty of sin, which is death!
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of Elohim (God) is eternal life in Yahshua Messiah (Christ Jesus) our Master (Lord). (NKJV)
John 6:48, 53-54 48 ‘I am the bread of life’. (RSV)
53 ‘I tell you solemnly’, said Yahshua (Jesus), ‘that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, you have no life in you’. (MNT) 54 ‘Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day’. (NKJV)
Our Savior was also the wave sheaf offering, offered within the Days of Unleavened Bread! We can see this being fulfilled in the book of John…let’s investigate!
We believers are also called first fruits as well!
Leviticus 23:10-12 10 Say to the people of Israel, When you come into the land which I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest;(RSV) 11 and he shall wave the sheaf before Yahweh, to be accepted for you. On the next day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. (WEB) 12 On the day when you wave the sheaf, you shall offer a male lamb without blemish a year old for a burnt offering to Yahweh. (WEB)
John 20:1,11-17 1 Now on the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene early, while it was yet dark, unto the tomb, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb. (ASV)
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; (RSV) 12 And she saw two messengers (angels) in white sitting there, the one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Yahshua (Jesus) had lain. (MKJV) 13 "Why are you weeping?" asked the messengers (angels). "They have taken my Master away," she answered, "and I do not know where they have laid him." (TCNT) 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Yahshua (Jesus) standing, and didn't know that it was Yahshua (Jesus). (WEB) 15 "Why are you weeping?" He (Yahshua) asked; "who are you looking for?" She, supposing that He was the gardener, replied, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have put Him and I will remove Him." (WNT) 16 Yahshua (Jesus) said unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and said unto Him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. (KJV) 17 Yahshua (Jesus) said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My Elohim (God) and your Elohim (God).'" (NKJV)
This wave sheaf was cut at the same time of day on the Sabbath that our Messiah rose from the dead, after the three days and three nights. He ascended to the Father, to be accepted by Him, the morning after the Sabbath, just as we read in John. This is why Mary was told not to touch Him, as He had not yet ascended to the Father! Interesting!!! Now on to the next Feast day!
Pentecost.
Leviticus 23:15-16 15 And you shall count from the morrow after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven full weeks shall they be, (RSV) 16 even to the next day after the seventh Sabbath you shall number fifty days; and you shall offer a new meal offering to Yahweh. (WEB)
Deuteronomy 16:10 You shall keep the feast of weeks to Yahweh your Elohim (God) with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give, according as Yahweh your Elohim (God) blesses you: (WEB)
We see in the above Scriptures, that we are to count seven Sabbaths…from the Sabbath between the first and last day of Unleavened Bread. The day after the seventh Sabbath, this is when we observe the Feast of Weeks, or as we’ll see in the New Covenant, Pentecost.
As I stated before, Yahshua was accepted by Yahweh the Father as the wave sheaf of the first fruits, Him being the first of the first fruits, we are also called first fruits!
This is why the Feast of Weeks, the Day of Pentecost is so important to us! What exactly occurred on this day?
Acts 2:1-4 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (KJV) 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. (ASV) 3 And they saw tongues, like flames of fire, coming to rest on every one of them. (BBE) 4 And they were all filled with the Set-apart (Holy) Spirit, and began to speak with other languages (tongues) as the Spirit gave to them to speak forth. (DBY)
We can see: (1) they were all together in one place (2) this special day is referred to as Pentecost in the Greek (3) a mighty wind, tongues, flames of fire, and the Set-apart Spirit are all connected. Let’s investigate these words!
4005 pentekoste- (Thayers) Pentecost = "the fiftieth day"; the second of the three great Jewish feasts, celebrated at Jerusalem yearly, the seventh week after the Passover, in grateful recognition of the completed harvest
4154 pneo (pneh'-o); (Strongs) a primary word; to breathe hard, i.e. breeze: KJV-- blow. Compare 5594.
4151 pneuma (pnyoo'-mah); (Strongs) from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) Elohim (God),
Messiah’s (Christ's) spirit, the Set-apart (Holy) Spirit: KJV-- ghost, life, spirit (-ual, -ually), mind. Compare 5590.
1100 glossa- (Thayers) 1) the tongue, a member of the body, an organ of speech 2) a tongue; the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations.
This Set-apart Spirit, is the promised Comforter that Yahshua spoke about! Other translations render it Helper, and Counselor! Let’s look into these Scriptures!
John 14:16,26 16 And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, so that He may be with you forever, (MKJV)
26 But the Comforter, the Set-apart (Holy) Spirit, whom the Father will send in my Name, will teach you everything, and bring to your remembrance everything that I have told you. (MNT)
John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. (NKJV)
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. (RSV)
In the Old Covenant, we believe the Law was given to the Israelites on this day, in the New Covenant, we see that the Set-apart Spirit was given!
Trumpets
Leviticus 23:24 Speak to the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest to you, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a set-apart meeting (holy convocation). (WEB)
Why is the blowing of a trumpet so important? What is the purpose? Isn’t that just for those in the Old Covenant? Surely, the blowing of Trumpets has nothing to do with us today, or do they?
8643 teruw` ah- (Brown-Driver-Briggs) an alarm, a signal, a sound of tempest, a shout, a shout or blast of war or alarm or joy a) an alarm of war, a war-cry, a battle-cry b) a blast (for marching) c) a shout of joy (with religious impulse) d) a shout of joy (in general)
Let’s investigate this subject of Trumpets in the New Covenant!
Revelation 8:2, 6-13 2 Then I saw the seven messengers (angels) who are in the presence of Elohim (God), and seven trumpets were given to them. (WNT)
6 And the seven messengers who are having the seven trumpets did prepare themselves that they may sound; (YLT) 7 The first (1st) messenger (angel) sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. (KJV) (ASV) 8 And the second (2nd) messenger (angel) sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; 9 And destruction came on a third part of the living things which were in the sea, and on a third part of the ships. (BBE) 10 And the third (3rd) messenger (angel) sounded his trumpet: and there fell out of the heaven a great star, burning as a torch, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters. (DBY) 11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood, and a third part of the waters became wormwood. And many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter. (MKJV) 12 And the fourth (4th) messenger (angel) blew his trumpet, and the third part of the sun was blasted, and a third part of the moon, and a third part of the stars; so that the third part of them should be darkened, and for a third part of the day there was no light, and at night it was the same. (MNT) 13 And I looked, and I heard a messenger (an angel) flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, "Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three messengers (angels) who are about to sound!" (NKJV)
The whole chapter of Rev. 8 talks about the blowing of trumpets, and let me tell you, the sounding of these trumpets bring severe consequences…but the last three are WOES! Could they get any worse? Let’s see!
Revelation 9:1-6 1 And the fifth (5th) messenger (angel) sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. (KJV) 2 And he opened the pit of the abyss; and there went up a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. (ASV) 3 And from the smoke locusts came out on the earth; and power was given them, like the power of scorpions. (BBE) 4 and it was said to them, that they should not injure the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but the men who have not the seal of Elohim (God) on their foreheads: (DBY) (This seal is the real, personal NAME of the Father~ Rev. 14) 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months. And their torment was like a scorpion's torment when he stings a man. (MKJV) 6 In those days men will seek death, and will not find it; they will long to die, but death ever flees from them. (MNT)
Revelation 9:11-18,20-21 11 And they had a king over them, which is the messenger (angel) of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue has his name Apollyon. { Apollyon: that is to say, A destroyer} (KJV) 12 One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things. 13 Then the sixth (6th) messenger (angel) sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before Elohim (God), (NKJV) 14 saying to the sixth messenger (angel) who had the trumpet, "Release the four messengers (angels) who are bound at the great river Euphrates." (RSV) 15 Then the four messengers (angels), that were held in readiness for that hour…day… month…year, were let loose, to destroy a third of mankind. (TCNT) 16 The number of the armies of the horsemen was two hundred million {literally, "ten thousands of ten thousands"}. I heard the number of them. (WEB) 17 And this was the appearance of the horses which I saw in my vision--and of their riders. The body-armor of the riders was red, blue and yellow; and the horses' heads were shaped like the heads of lions, while from their mouths there came fire and smoke and sulfur. (WNT) 18 by these three were the third of men killed, from the fire, and from the smoke, and from the brimstone, that is proceeding out of their mouth, (YLT)
20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts. (KJV)
Do you get the big picture yet? Trumpets play a big role in the plan of the Most High…and even after the devastation caused by these six Trumpets, we see in the last two Scriptures above that mankind still remains hard hearted, stiff necked, and unrepentant! Doesn’t this sound very similar to the stubborn Pharoah of Egypt?
You know, I’m so thankful that our heavenly Father has perfect patience, or as I’ve stated several times before, “we’d all be grease spots if He wasn’t very forgiving!”
The next Trumpet is something we all long for as believers…but on the flip side the unbelieving will have to go through many more terrible events… Let’s continue!
Revelation 11:15, 18 15 And the seventh (7th) messenger (angel) sounded; and there followed great voices in heaven, and they said, The kingdom of the world is become the kingdom of our Master (Lord), and of His Messiah (Christ): and He shall reign for ever and ever. (ASV)
18 And the nations were angry, and your wrath has come, and the time for the dead to be judged, and the time of reward for your servants, the prophets, and for the saints, and for those in whom is the fear of your name, small and great, and the time of destruction for those who made the earth unclean. (BBE)
We all want this day to come…when the Father finally sends His Son to bring peace to a world that has not known peace…to a world that has lost it’s way for six thousand years! That will be fantastic…but to get to that point, it will be difficult to say the least!
Let’s continue our investigation into this seventh Trumpet!
Matthew 24:31 And He shall send His messengers (angels) with a great sound of (the 7th) trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from the one extremity of the heavens to the other extremity of them. (DBY)
1 Corinthians 15:51-53 51 Behold, I speak a mystery to you; we shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed; 52 In a moment, in a glance of an eye, at the last (7th) trumpet. For a trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall all be changed. (MKJV) 53 For this corruptible must be clothed with incorruption, and this mortal must be clothed with immortality. (MNT)
1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Master (Lord), that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Master (Lord) will by no means precede those who are asleep. (NKJV) 16 For the Master (Lord) Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call. and with the sound of the (7th) trumpet of Elohim(God). And the dead in Messiah (Christ) will rise first; (RSV) 17 then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Master (Lord) in the air. So we will be with the Master (Lord) forever. (WEB)
Revelation 20:4-5 4 And I saw thrones, and some who were seated on them, to whom judgment was entrusted. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded on account of the testimony that they had borne to Yahshua (Jesus) and on account of Elohim’s (God's) Message, and also the souls of those who had not worshipped the wild beast or his statue, nor received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands; and they came to Life and were kings with Messiah (Christ) for a thousand years. (WNT) 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. (KJV)
We all desire to be a part of this first resurrection, to reign with our Messiah, and bring a healing of the mind and heart to mankind!
Along with what we have read so far, the unrepentant will have to deal with the seven last plagues, before their knees give in!
The Book of Revelation is sealed with seven seals, each seal having bad consequences. The 7th seal has the seven trumpets of which we have studied. The 7th trumpet consists of these seven last plagues. Remember, the number seven is a number of completion!
Revelation 15:1 And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous, seven messengers (angels) having seven plagues, which are the last, for in them is finished the wrath of Elohim (God). (ASV)
Isn’t it a sad state when man will have to be forced to be happy? To stop hurting one another? To be honest with one another? On to the next Day of the Appointed Times.
Atonement
Leviticus 23:27-28 27 Also on the tenth of this seventh month is the day of the atonement: a set-apart meeting (holy convocation) shall it be unto you; and you shall afflict your souls, and present an offering by fire to Yahweh (Jehovah). (DBY) 28 And on that day you may do no sort of work, for it is a day of taking away sin, to make you clean before Yahweh (the Lord) your Elohim (God). (BBE)
Leviticus 16:7-10, 21-22, 29-31 7 He shall take the two goats and present them before Yahweh (the LORD) at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. (NKJV) 8 and Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats, one lot for Yahweh (the LORD) and the other lot for Azazel. (RSV) 9 Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for Yahweh, and offer him for a sin offering. (WEB) 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell for the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before Yahweh, to make atonement for him, to send him away for the scapegoat into the wilderness. (WEB)
21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the sins of the sons of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send away by the hand of a chosen man into the wilderness. (MKJV) 22 The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an uninhabited land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness. (NKJV)
29 And it shall be a statute to you for ever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves, and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you; (RSV) 30 for on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins you shall be clean before Yahweh. (WEB) 31 It shall be a Sabbath of rest unto you, and you shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever. (KJV)
Exactly, what does ‘afflict your soul’ mean? Do we have the answer within the Scriptures? Let’s investigate!
Acts 27:9 And when much time was spent, and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast was now already gone by, Paul (Shaul) admonished them, (ASV)
(fast) 3521 nesteia (nace-ti'-ah); (Strongs)
from 3522; abstinence (from lack of food, or voluntary and religious); specifically, the fast of the Day of Atonement: KJV-- fast (-ing.).
We see that to ‘afflict your soul’ on the Day of Atonement…is to fast…from an evening to an evening!
Leviticus 23:32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves; on the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath. (RSV)
We can see a time yet future, when the arch-enemy of good, the father of sin, will be put in prison, bound in chains for a thousand year period. HalleluYah!!! Is this symbolic of the goat let loose in the wilderness?
Revelation 20:1-3 1 Then I saw a messenger (an angel) coming down from Heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, and upon his arm he carried a great chain, (WNT) 2 and he laid hold on the dragon, the old serpent, who is Devil and Adversary, and did bind him a thousand years, (YLT) 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. (KJV)
Tabernacles and the Eighth Day
Leviticus 23:34-36 34 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto Yahweh (Jehovah). (ASV) 35 On the first day there will be a set-apart (holy) meeting: do no field-work. (BBE) 36 Seven days you shall present an offering by fire to Yahweh (Jehovah); on the eighth day shall be a set-apart (holy) meeting (convocation) unto you; and you shall present an offering by fire to Yahweh (Jehovah): it is a solemn assembly; no manner of servile work shall you do. (DBY)
5521 (tabernacle) cukkah- (Brown-Driver-Briggs) a thicket, a covert, a booth a) a thicket b) a booth (a crude or temporary shelter)
John 7:2 Now the Jews' Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. (KJV)
